B.A. from Allegheny College
Ann has worked in graphics, illustration, painting, puppetry, writing - but when she began exploring calligraphy in the 1980's, she discovered that she could combine painting, drawing, poetry, color, composition, ideas, and words under the encompassing category of lettering arts! Ann believes that words are important and must be carefully used.
"I take a vivid interest in 'the clothes which words wear.' I try to make them fit, explain, enhance, or illustrate the meaning they describe. Unwritten, words are ephemeral, lost as soon as spoken, but when written down, they become real, legible, and exact," she says. She likes to turn content into form. The intention for her art is to call attention, to clarify, to aspire, to inspire. She is still discovering and learning how to do that.
"I have been involved in art my whole life- since I was small enough to draw on the underside of my mother's dining room table!"
